Yeah, I found that out. I'm trying to avoid having to download a separate
driver and compile, and then (possibly) re-compile a kernel, etc. Especially
when new versions of the driver come out. I'm hoping to find an apt source
that will make my life easier, so I don't have to fight too much to get this
to work.

[KSB] Recompiling and installing Madwifi is relatively painless and does not need a kernel recompile. Install kernel-headers for your version and CPU (e.g, kernel-headers-686) and you will only need to rebuild the madwifi modules.

But I think Madwifi comes bundled with Kubuntu, which is why I hope
that the iwconfig output will be useful. Here's hoping it's something
simple such as your having the radio turned off!
