I repeat, ghastly. :) I've seen interfaces where the default is perhaps in italics or a different color, along with a legend stating so. When you alter something, it changes color / changes style / etc. I prefer that to FF's "missing keys and values" method. If they don't want to clutter, then perhaps they could organize the list (which is annoyingly long) into a tree which can be collapsed.
