What a ghastly user interface.  It's annoying how unset string variables are
not shown by default (or so it seems).

I think the point of not showing them means that they are set to their default value. Of course, if you don't know what the variable names are, or what the default values are, then you get to make more cranial-shaped indentations on your monitor ...
