an mpeg file or an mpeg converted to "ntsc widescreen dvd mpeg" using either 
mencoder or ffmpeg.

If I run the mpeg through mencoder, the resulting file is still mpeg, not vob, 
etc.

I installed dvdauthor and am trying to make sense of the man page.  Will give 
it a try.  Thanks again.
