Thanks, Stewart, but it worked correctly until I experimented with mplayer as 
a backend.

On my system, it insists on changing the screen resolution to 640x480 on 
kmplayer or kaffeine-mplayer startup, with 3/4 of the video off the screen.  
It traps my mouse pointer within the video area, and I can't access the 
menus, controls or other programs (enter stops play and mouse mobility 
returns).  Not acceptable.
