I have several clients who have RHEL on servers.  They run software that
is only supported by the vendor when it runs on RHEL.  I believe the
RHEL yearly renewal fee is $395.

Could you tell us what was it that they were charging you thousands of
dollars per server per year for?  The Microsoft licenses I've seen have
been much higher.

CentOS is also a viable option... SME server is now based off of that
distro.
