I doubt it, but the fans on both the power supply and CPU are working.  Are
they working at the designed speed?  That's what I wanted lm-sensors for.

i only ask because on some mobos, if you replace the fan it can work perfectly but the bios somehow thinks that the fan is *missing*. i've only encountered it on dell boxen before, but i wouldn't limit it to only dell.

Again, I am going to guess, never.

might be a good idea to flash it when you get the chance. it could just be a bug in the BIOS that they have fixed in the meantime.

Knoppix sees the HDD, but before I could try to mount it, I rebooted for some
reason.  This time, the bios couldn't find the HDD nor the CD-ROM.  Heat
issue?  An emergency pushed this machine off the workbench, so I couldn't
test it again after it cooled.

well, it could still be a hardware issue. in all honesty, it sounds like the two problems are unrelated- one sounds like the board's sensors and the other sounds like the board's IDE channels are going bad. i hope i'm wrong though; boards can get costly. but flaky IDE channel controllers can cause the intermittent behaviour you're describing (if they're on the same IDE cable, which they shouldn't be, that also can cause problems- i've had at least three instances where IDE cables have gone bad on me. these are much cheaper to replace).

it's very likely not a heat issue if you can hold your finger to it without being burned. try running the HDD outside of the case. and as long as the cpu fan is spinning at what LOOKS to be a safe rate of speed to your naked eye, there's a good chance that that isn't the problem (if the CPU WAS overheating, when you tried to reboot it most likely would just spit POST error beeps at you that sound like wailing sirens; it's unlikely you'd even get a BIOS.)
