[PLUG] drive testing

My notebook's harddrive is making a sound like a paddle hitting a ping-pong ball.  In my experience, that is a very bad sign.  heh  However, SMART tests do not show any problem.  What are other ways that I could test the drive, or should I just replace it?

HP would want me to mail the entire notebook to them and I'm out of the country on top of that.  They won't take just the drive unless it dies first.

(There is room for a second drive in the case, but I'd need an expensive mounted bracket, connector, or screw or something.  heh)
