I did use the BIOS utility which seems to do a short then long SMART test.  It passes.

I'm going to try to view the SMART info with smartmon tools.

That notebook is running Vista.  *My* new old notebook runs Ubuntu and its drive is fine.  heh  If anything happens to the drive, the new notebook will also be running Ubuntu because HP didn't give me an option to get a recovery DVD and the back-ups are 3000 miles away.

If you can prove to HP that the drive is dead, they'll let you just ship back the drive as opposed to shipping the entire laptop.  Usually, their diagnosis procedure is to use the HD test utility that is embedded into the BIOS.  I would start by using that to see if the drive fails.

HP would want me to mail the entire notebook to them and I'm out of the country on top of that.  They won't take just the drive unless it dies first.

(There is room for a second drive in the case, but I'd need an expensive mounted bracket, connector, or screw or something.  heh)
