I did use the BIOS utility which seems to do a short then long SMART test. It passes. I'm going to try to view the SMART info with smartmon tools. That notebook is running Vista. *My* new old notebook runs Ubuntu and its drive is fine. heh If anything happens to the drive, the new notebook will also be running Ubuntu because HP didn't give me an option to get a recovery DVD and the back-ups are 3000 miles away.
