wow, i really love all the responses! it's really helpful. James- i've noticed a similar trend; my coding/developer friends tend to use emacs whilst the sysadmin buddies i have tend to use vi. Art- i totally forgot about the lesser ones, like Jed! as an added bonus, jed has an "emacs emulation mode" and is a lot more lightweight than emacs! i just found that interesting. Dan- ditto what chuckk said! i'd love to see what you like and dislike about both; this'd be invaluable as you use both regularly. do you have a preferred editor for certain contexts? Josh- excellent tip, the .emacs thing looks pretty intriguing! emacs, while huge compared to vim, is incredibly flexible; almost as if it's a separate system unto itself! Chuckk- thanks so much! that was the exact kind of summation i'm looking for! let's keep this going, i'm curious as to what the rest of you use! -- Brent Saner 215.264.0112 (cell) 215.362.7696(residence) http://www.thenotebookarmy.org Bill Gates is to hacking as Sid Vicious was to the Sex Pistols: no talent, everyone hates him, and he's just in it for the fame and money. ___________________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group -- http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion -- http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
