might be a loose connection. usually it's a broken backlight if it drops on a corner or on the hinge. if it's open and lands on a corner, it's usually the screen itself (the most expensive part, usually).
so you MIGHT be lucky and it's just the videocard that popped out

My son dropped his old Nintendo GBA SP and it doesn't light up now either.  I had just replaced the motherboard!  Well, the LCD was usually dim to begin with.  I think it was brighter with the original motherboard.  I might check into a backlight for that as well, but maybe not.  We have Nintendo DS'es now.  heh
