Yeah (sigh) neither /etc/fstab changed.  The same fstab is being used on two 
machines.  It continues to work on the 8.04 machine, but not on the two 8.10 
machines.  It worked on the two 8.10 machines until last week.

Here are the two mutually exclusively working entries.

//sloth/user/Art /mnt/H cifs 
file_mode=0775,dir_mode=0775,user=art@RHD.ORG,password=the.password,uid=1000,gid=1000,auto,rw,guest 
0 0
//sloth/user/CompMDB /mnt/CompMDB cifs
