I did that, and two separate technicians said on no uncertain terms that the ONT will not support what we are talking about here. 

This is maddening... They want $150 to run the Ethernet with the Coax... and I'm not going to take that kind of risk on something they are telling me is not possible...

You need to tell them you only want Internet on Ethernet, not both.
They may be confused with your question.  Word it properly so that
they get the idea of what you want to do.  Coax will remain for TV,
but you want the internet on the Ethernet only, not through the Coax
or both.
