I have a drive that I'd like to get some stuff off of as well, and the "self-recovery" methods didn't work.  I'm going to try www.drivefish.com, as they're $200 flat fee and only if they can do a recovery.  They don't do clean-room though - they have a partner if that becomes necessary, but it won't be $200...

Hey, I forgot about the freezer!  Thanks. I've tried most of the
other suggestions already, I'll give that a shot tomorrow.
