I saw this recently; check your login setup at the server. If it does anything weird (in the case I saw, the user was exec'ing newgrp in .bashrc) or perhaps outputs anything unexpected by sftp, then all bets are off. Put all interactive stuff in .bash_profile. SFTP's server end will not be affected by that. Dan W.
