That's interesting. I just booted this netbook with 10.04 installed and I got the 5 second delay. I also have a menu.lst. (Perhaps it remains from a previous installation, and perhaps, if you have one, it works with grub2.) Certainly no grub expert, but looking at the 3 linux computers here at home, all are 9.10 or 10.04, and all have menu.lst, and one -- a 9.10 -- presents a menu every time. OK, $ grub --version grub (GNU GRUB 0.97), but these are all current Ubuntus.
