I tried it for a while with davmail so that I could access exchange
without Outlook.  Not a fan. Went back to evolution.

All bets are off with sloppy syncing. That said, I'd bet the problem
originates with the syncing.  I had similar problems with Palm
syncing.  My solutions was to switch to BB and then Android.  Google
sync on the BB did a lot of damage to the data as well.
