The *right* way to do it in gnome it to leverege gnome-vfs -- which
was, single-handedly, sufficient to keep me from bothering with heavy
IDEs for more than a week from 2004 until earlier this year.  (well,
that and the fact that there are plugins for *everything* in gedit and
it's easy to write new ones.).

Sadly, I've never used EMACS.
