Re: [PLUG] plug Digest, Vol 111, Issue 29

First post here guy's so cut me some slack.

1.) My solution has been Clear communications/Sprint now sprint for 4g internet capable of streaming 10 devices we use Hulu Free and have a &.00 Netflix Acct.  total cost 61 / month (54.00 internet & 7.00 for Netflix) works well for us The WiFi coverage from the router covers the entire house and a surprising amount of the yard.

2.) I'm a beginner with Linux and been lurking for a while but the conversations seem to be over my head. are there ever any presentations done for us lurking beginners? And please no RTFM comments they're not really helpful to anyone. Thanks to any responders

I've managed to cut down my monthly cost with Comcast by doing a few
things. It had ballooned to $160 a month with HBO + Showtime. I did some
research, and found a few things:

- Killed Showtime. It had ballooned to $15 a month instead of $10.
- Switched to a lower Internet max speed. Comcast used to have one Internet
speed, then broke it out to several tiers, and of course, put all existing
customers into the second most expensive tier. I cut way back. Do you
really need more than 3 mbps at home? I sure don't - while I play MMORPGs,
all assets are preloaded to the hard disk, and latency is really what
matters. The 3 mbps option is only $30 / month.

With these two changes, my bill came down to $110 from $160. I'm eliminated
another $8 / month by purchasing my own cable modem, which I confirmed, you
can now use due to a class action lawsuit last year. You just have to call
in the serial number of the cable modem.

$102 a month is still absurdly high for what it is, but unfortunately,
seems to be the best option out there. That gets me HiDef + Digital Tier
Plus + HBO + 3 mbps Internet.

-Tim

To follow up on what Rich wrote, I just built a pretty decent PC from a
combo ordered from Newegg.com:
Asus motherboard
AMD A10-5800K CPU (this is actually what they call an "APU", it has the
graphics hardware (Radeon) added to the CPU chip)
8 GB RAM
1 TB Seagate HDD
Plextor DVDRW
Rosewill (the Newegg house brand) minitower case with 500W power supply

All for $432

The motherboard is very flexible, including USB 3, a slot for a graphics
card in case you want to upgrade, a couple of other slots, and the BIOS
allows overclocking.

It was really not hard to assemble at all.  I don't feel I could have
gotten the quality and choice of components for anywhere near that price
buying prebuilt.

Wow (I think).
I have had Comcast internet for a long time with very little in the way
of interruptions.  Recently they offered to double my speed and give me
basic cable for another $3.  I think that's about $70 (plus $400 in
taxes and fees).

To be fair to Comcast, the outages were caused by the cable to the house being split open like an over-cooked hotdog from age and exposure (they said and I believe them.)  To be really fair to Comcast, they took 6 (or 7) days to discover and fix that - while the house was without connectivity.  They said "oops, sorry."  I said "FiOS ASAP."  I'm reasonably sure my Comcast experience will be better going forward as that was maybe 10 years ago.

Although you may not want to your best bet is a reinstall.  Having the
package installed + having your latest install is not recommended IMO.  In
this case, it is best not to cut corners.

One thing that bothers me about FiOS is being forced to rent their
hardware.  We have one DVR and two set-top boxes, and pay $30 a month in
rent.  Has anyone bought hardware for FiOS?
