Very true.  I waiting until v8.x which is where I think its become a compelling alternative to Gapps.  I just upgraded to 8.5.x but I honestly don't see any glaring visual differences.  I wouldn't consider myself a power user of the product though.

I've run it in VMs a few times.  Hasn't quite been there the last few
times, but I'm sure it continues to improve.  I agree it is probably
the closest I've seen so far.
