Re: [PLUG] FOSSCON communication ops

A lot of very good information in here. I'll be sure to add that to my radio as well, before FOSSCON. I finally have a battery that lasts longer than half an hour. Keith saw this at PLUG the other night.

Jim, thank you for the information and I look forward to seeing your installfest.

Looking forward to FOSSCON this year! It's gonna be the best!

QSL.

Last year was my first FOSSCON as an amateur.

We went, what some thought was a little 'ham heavy'.

There is a trend in security conferences for license testing and much
more. Much of the 'much more' is based on SDR.

I will have amateur gear and so will others. I suggested that we use
the 'con simplex'

Simplex 146.580   http://conham.org/

as our local talk frequency.

If you want license testing or anything else at FOSSCON please let the
staff know your interests. Not me. All the others. My interest in
known.

If there is a strong enough interest, I am sure that /almost/ anything
amateur related can be added to FOSSCON '16.

Less than ONE week!

Gotta go, tons of stuff to do!

See you all at FOSSCON Saturday.

BTW, it was a security conference, BsidesDE, in November (2013), that
got me motivated to get licensed. (and into Bull Mastiffs; redbull
with shots of espresso)

http://jedijf.blogspot.com/2013/11/bsidesde-projectphree-and-amateur-radio.html

I anticipate /another/ wireless class at Bsides15 in November. Josh &
Janice will probably be at FOSSCON too.

2014 we built ADSB antennas!

Ok, thanks for the come back Jim...

I didn't know about the "hamcon" frequency so I added that to my radio.  I'm interested to see how that gets used.

To my other point though- general FOSSCON op comm...  is there a need for that or is something already in place?  That type of traffic isn't something that would be carried over the ham bands generally but considering that most ham radios are FRS/GMRS/MURS capable is would be an opportunity to have hams (and non-hams) help out with that if there was a need (and they had a capable radio).

I know it may seem like a weird question but I've done a lot of conferences from the attendee, presenter and personnel point-of-view and the one thing things that is necessary all the time is good communications.  I think I noticed last year people "running" around looking for each other or having questions about who was where.   My understanding of this location is that it is a little bit smaller so perhaps this is not a significant concern.

There will probably be enough hams around to jump in if needed- 'kinda what we do anyway :D
