The name of the game is antenna...  As much height and gain as possible but having a good ground plane is a must.

Yeah, I have one of those DVB dongles and I've messed with the ADSB
decoders.  I actually was trying to pick up ATC using the thing but
was never able to do so. I'm not sure if that was a software or a
hardware limitation - I imagine it can't tune every band in the
spectrum.  Gentoo has most of the SDR stuff I've heard of.
