There's a lot of outdated info here. Three (or more) DP outputs is actually the default in current mid-range and high end consumer/gamer GPUs.

Those cards are cost the same as — or more than — professional workstation cards, with much higher power draw and fan noise:

GTX 960: 120W TDP, costs $400
W4100: 50W TDP, costs $250
NVS 510: 35W TDP, costs $250

You can get an RX 570 for about $170, but it's still 120W TDP and two huge fans.  And my experience with a decade of AMD's Linux drivers is that the drivers don't stabilize until the product is two or three generations old.  Hence my recommendation of an AMD Wx100, because I know that line does quad 4k on Linux without any hiccups.

Will X let you move windows among monitors, or resize them across multiple monitors, without this? Do "full screen" and "maximize" work properly in all applications without this?
