Before I was a Linux person, I was one of those stupid overclocker kids, when that meant dip switches, jumpers, and settings galore. Glad it helped a little.

Got it working.  Turned out to be something flaky with how I installed the RAM.   I just played around trying to isolate a back stick as suggested here, and it finally just worked.

Thanks to Soren, Rich, and Adam for suggestions!

Test your sticks one by one, see if one has a problem, or if all of them do. This will tell you what to do next. I'd wager you'll find that one stick has issues, or that the problem clears when you start removing and reseating the sticks.

2.  The memory is incompatible.  The brand I bought "Ballistix
DDR4-3000" is not on Asrock's official approved list.  Also, AMD suggest
DDR4-2933 as the fastest memory.   I thought it would work, but I'm
confused by memory specs.

This is my vote.  My experience — corroborated by anecdotes from other system builders — is that Ryzen's memory controller is pretty picky. Try sticks off the "approved" list.

Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

I despise people who go to the gutter on either the right or the left and hurl rocks at those in the center.

Not every child has an equal talent or an equal ability or equal motivation, but they should have the equal right to develop their talent and their ability and their motivation, to make something of themselves.
- John F. Kennedy

With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own.
