No, they are not.  Sendmail is a perfectly reasonable choice as an MTA,
despite a persistent and erroneous mythos that it's not.

Smail is obsolete and hasn't been updated for 10+ years, but it
is a substantial part of the foundation of Exim so arguably it
lives on under another name.
