I've been using the release upgrade process since 2012, no you did not read that wrong. I just wait until October to do the release upgrades. They typically come available in the summer but if you don't ***need*** 22.04 right away for some reason then just wait until the fall so you know all the kinks have been worked out.

11.xx -> 12.04 LTS -> 14.04 LTS -> 16.04 LTS - > 18.04 LTS

(I also skipped 20.04 LTS but I am running some 21.10 systems)

This has worked for me on EVERY Kubuntu / Ubuntu system I have for over 9 years (about 10 of them). The fact that you have to go from 18.04 LTS -> 20.04 LTS to 22.04 LTS is NOT big a deal. At least it shouldn't be when you consider the alternative. The increased time to go through 20.04 (which is literally logging in and doing another release upgrade) is far better than starting from scratch.

My advice is not to upgrade upon release. There are bugs that are ironed out in the first few weeks almost every time like clockwork, and I have broken a prod machine before by running and upgrade on the release date. You can upgrade piecemeal to 20.04 and then to 22.04 and this is workable, but if you are going to do this I recommend not rushing into it and holding off a few weeks. If you want it right away do a fresh install. I think you will have a safer experience if you do it this way if this machine is in every day use. Thanks.
