i know i am hardly qualified to speak but i did own RH 6.1 and i had the same problem .. my hdd is less that 8 gigs.. i did you pass the argument to the formatting program to check for bad blocks .. if you did that could be the culprit...
becaus the same happened to me everytime i checked for bad blocks the format would run for a while then just freeze.... hope i helped..
