the problems started when i disabled portmapper. i don't know this for
sure, but i am extrapolating backwards. because it did work at one
point in time, and it depends on xfs/portmapper, and i did disable
both shortly after the install...

question the to you debians: how do i tell X/xfs to use IPC and not
the IP stack?
