... all of which registered before the limitation that one be a
degree-granting, upper-level (I don't think 4-year is a requirement,
but it may be) institution.

Speaking as one who tried to register an .edu for a high school (see
www.tjs.org), it at least was flat-out impossible to to this. I
tried before the decentralization of the registry... but all those
grass-roots registrars can only do .{com,net,org}, right?
