Hrm. Who told you that ?..
And if you configured the kernel with PCI IDs database,
cat /proc/pci will show also ASCII info on your PCI devices - just enough
to figure out what you have.
Then compile this driver in or make it loadable - doesn't matter.
At least for 2.4 kernels.
