Thanks, Fred.  I am glad that I will be able to do this from the hard drive 
with the CD contents.  A couple of follow up questions, though.

"tom's root boot disk"  What is it? how do I make or get it?

Will I be able to access the vfat or msdos partition (where the copies 
currently are) to copy the files from there to the ext2 or ext3 
partition?  Presumeably, I won't be able to access the cdrom from the boot 
disk boot up to get them from there.
