A few weeks ago I posted a message here about my inability to download files through my firewall/dialup gateway machine. Gabriel had a few helpful hints but they didn't seem to solve the problem. After searching every linux newsgroup I could find, I got a hint to try looking at comp.protocols.ppp The problem turned out to be the modem speed I'd selected, 115200. I'd learned in my windows days that there was really no such thing as a modem speed too high, so I'd always chosen the highest available value, and never had a problem. While I have no understanding why this happens, choosing that modem speed with my 56k modem (a Zoom 2919, ISA jumpered model) let me browse web pages normally and use gnucleus or ICQ without problem, but caused real problems when retrieving files, whether via ftp or http protocols. Even more interesting, compressed files (.tar.gz, .zip, .pdf) seemed to transfer much better than unzipped ones (.doc for example). Remember, ppp users: follow the speed limit!
