You have to understand networking Layers. (OSI) (this is a model, not a protocol) Verizon is supplying: Level 1 - The actual Physical/Electrical Protocols for running over the DSL Line. Ethernet boards and hubs live here. Level 2 - Also called data link Etherrnet, PPPOE. Approximately the mac layer. 802.3 and all that good stuff. Ethernet switches. ISP starts here. Level 3 - Networking Here is where the internet and Your ISP start. IP lives here. Here is where you need an ISP and an IP assigned. Routers live here. Level 4 Transport. This is TCP. UDP, Etc Levels 5, 6, 7 session, presentation and application. Higher level stuff lives here. SMTP, http, ftp etc. Main point - Verizon handles 1 and 2. ISP and internet starts at 3. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.6 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://www.gnupg.org iD8DBQE9ASrAK3KGHMBjApYRAomAAJwIbsrKVdpuaDNemVO9DKff7o6ciACeIT7X tELBPecZ9kqFiqHKoEDrpZY= =5Aou -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ______________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group - http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements-http://lists.phillylinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mail/listinfo/plug
