Long story short: Microsoft hardware is, in my experience, fragile and
overpriced - much like their software :-)

Mine is the exact opposite - I have mice of theirs running for years. (not
optical ones, tho). Same for their Natural keyboards. And the Digital
SideWinder joystick.

I have a Sidewinder joystick, non force feedback, which is very nice to use. I was having trouble with it recently, but I think that's a result of "upgrading" to XP or something on the software side. After using the handle twist feature I wouldn't want to go without it.

My non-optical M$ mice both developed a detent feel (what I mean is that it has rough spots that cause the pointer to jump) in the horizontal direction only, even after cleaning. I replaced those with Logitech optical mice. Smooth.
