Somewhere back in this thread I remember that the problem is with his 
IDE hardware and that the cdrom is attached to the slave.  That is why I 
had him grep for hd devices.  Now my SCSI cdroms are /dev/scd0 and 
/dev/scd1 on my SCSI only box.
