Looks like the hardware discussion has taken on a life of its own, as I figured it would. Fortunately, I got the information I needed within a few posts. Long story short, my new system is the following: AthlonXP2200 Asus A7N266-VM Mobo 512 MB RAM Western Digital WD800JB (80 GB, 7200RPM, 8MB Buffer) CDRW The Mobo has integrated Ethernet, which doesn't seem to have a Linux driver-- some obscure Realtek chipset. The sound's pretty good, as is the onboard AGP graphics chip. The sound also has digital output-- RCA as well as optical--- which is perfect, since my digital recorder accepts both types of digital input. I'm happy now. -Beldon -- I cannot conceive that anybody will require multiplications at the rate of 40,000 or even 4,000 per hour ... -- F. H.
