Could you point out where they make this recommendation, please?
I was under the impression that that the CC precisely avoided making
it their business what license I used, which is why I like them
better than the GNU folks.

They say their licenses were not designed with software in mind. You
can see the trend towards more specific CC licenses with the new
"sharing license" (which I vaguely dislike, but that's a debate for
another day).
