Don't forget either though that even a cell phone without a service contract will get you 911. So just having one laying around charged is a good enough protection for an instance like that. What I'm thinking is that a UPS can power an entire computer and monitor for a few minutes, so it should be able to power a modem and VoIP box much longer due to lower power consumption. And I can run my laptop on its battery if I need to. But, that isn't nearly as important as the point about 911. I didn't know that any old deactivated cell phone could contact 911. Do absolutely all cell phones do this? I wish there was a way to test it before an emergency takes place. As far as comcast, afaik there is no contract... I don't have one? I thought it was a month to month service? I don't have a contract, but I was thinking that Comcast is more stable and faster than Verizon DSL. So, if I use VoIP I might be compelled to stick with Comcast. That's OK though, because I could always dump Comcast and VoIP at any time and go back to standard copper. ___________________________________________________________________________ Philadelphia Linux Users Group -- http://www.phillylinux.org Announcements - http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug-announce General Discussion -- http://lists.phillylinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
