I've not heard of Knoppix-STD but I tried booting with vanilla Knoppix.
The box has a Compaq/HP SCSI RAID array that requires a CCISS driver.
Knoppix does not have it by default.

Thanks! Google-ing for Knoppix-STD now!

(Although STD in medical parlance refers to sexually transmitted disease so I guess I'll be careful! :-D )

http://knoppix-std.org/ Check "help" when the boot menu comes up. I think there is an option to load drivers.

Well, your server has some bad symptoms. Could be a Serially Transmitted Disease.
