My machine from which I'm sending is behind a NAT box, but the public
IP is reverse-mapped (puddle.purple.com).  I don't accept mail here
(MX is ftp.ece, as you recall), but I do send it.

Well, if that's the case, then there's something in the body of the message that Verizon's MailPass boxes don't like. They have online content filtering, as well. Massage the body of the email and try again.
