Do an ebay search for cable tester. They have a "test all four" which will give you a readout of open/crossed/shorted pairs via LED generally under 20 bucks. You can go with the ideal devices I think Fluke even has one out, but you are going to pay.

Yeah, I wouldn't pay anywhere near that much unless it also contains a tone generator and probe. That's really overkill. Just wire carefully, do a quick and dirty test, and you're done. 99% of the the time your wiring should come out right.
