I think I screwed it up somehow when I created a "mixed" system -- Ubuntu Warty (stable) as a base, with some apps from Ubuntu Hoary (testing). There is a wiki/how-to that explains how and this is supposed to be safer way to go if you need the newer versions of apps with the stability of the current foundation.
