This isn't my laptop, although I'll be using it a lot over the next
month. And I'm not a native MacOS user anymore. What is the easy
(or, at least, recommended) way to install this stuff?

Go to Applications/Utilities and launch X11.app

(Installed automatically as part of Tiger (10.4); an install option
as part of Panther (10.3)
It's on the distribution CD/DVD.)

You also might look into installing fink, which is sort of like apt-get for OS X. See http://fink.sourceforge.net/.

Personally, I prefer Darwinports to fink ...
