When I'm not running X, the issue is typically bandwidth.  Still, if
that's not the case for you, you could invoke w3m on an html file that
you concoct to display the image inline.  It's a short script that you
then set to be your non-X viewer.

Remember that cacaview lets you zoom.  Cacaview rocks if you squint. ;-)
