Please do NOT support redhat.
Don't be ridiculous. RedHat is not a charity and neither is your
business. The only reason to give them money would be if you want
their product and think it is worth the price.
I ran all my servers on redhat, and then one day... out of the blue...
they decided to start charging thousands of dollars per server per year.
You didn't have to pay anything. You were free to use RedHat 9 for as
long as you liked. If you wanted to upgrade to something more recent,
but still similar, you were free to use Fedora. Core 1 was
essentially RedHat 10, but nobody wanted it because it wasn't branded
"RedHat". Nevermind that it was made almost entirely by RH employees
and distributed from RH servers.
It is far cheaper to buy Windows Server software than to buy Redhat's
overpriced products.
Can you provide an apples to apples comparison? The base RHEL server
product with web support and updates is about $350/yr. If you want
24x7 phone support the list price is $2500/yr. What does it cost for
a windows 2003 server license with 24x7 phone support? Then what does
is cost for Client Access Licenses to actually be able to use it?
Sure RHEL is expensive, but it is in-line with comparable options. If
you don't want a commercially supported Linux Distro, you still have
plenty of options.
