FWIW, 1280x1024 is not a "Widescreen" resolution. More likely resolutions for a widescreen display would be 1680x1050 or 1280x800. Both have a 16:10 aspect ratio. Your monitor should correctly report it's native resolution in its EDID info. This should be in your Xorg log. If you don't specify any resolution or timings, X might use the one reported by EDID.
