Actually, OSX is not a micro-kernel OS. Apple used Mach, previously used in
Jobs' NEXTSTEP project, not as a micro-kernel, but instead as a codebase to
build into a monolithic kernel, adding in significant sections of FreeBSD.
Some make the claim that it is a "hybrid" kernel (as do many proponents of
the NT kernel), but there isn't actually any such thing as a "hybrid" kernel.
It's just another monolithic kernel, like Linux, NT, and just about every
other popular PC OS out there.

But it isn't much like Linux at all, no.

As for the rest of the discussion, I haven't spoken up because I'm guessing
you are probably set on getting an Apple machine. I've never had anything
but trouble with them, and have found refuge in ThinkPad+Linux, so my Apple
anecdotes probably would not be very encouraging.
