When is leapord supposed to come out? I want something latest, since I am spending close to $1500. should I get the Apple extended warranty, is it worth it?

The "final beta" version was distributed to developers about two weeks ago.

The announced shipping date is "October."

As for memory... no system today should have less than 2 gb of memory is there is ANY intent to do any kind of multi-media processing (audio/video/whatever) or visit web sites who have a lot of "active" content. - especially with a contemporary graphics card.

Don't forget, OSX is a micro-kernel architecture based on the OSF Kernel. (Yeah, I know, long ago and many revs.) It's not Linux- like.
