Maybe not in the suburbs, but take a ride on SEPTA and you'll see tons of Coby 
<$15 1GB MP3 players (usually with headphones bigger than the stick).

I think Matthew is right that Apple cares about DRM so that you are locked 
into iPod products, less because they care about sharing.
