just a quick tip, you can drop to runlevel 1 or 2 (i think X loads at 3 in ubuntu... don't use it though. anyone correct me?) and then init the runlevel with X again instead of actually rebooting.
or you can reboot the X server itself instead of the entire machine- CTRL-ALT-Backspace ;)
